[Publish] Can I share animated GIFs through Buffer Publish?

IN THIS ARTICLE

Summary

GIFs are great. And they're everywhere! We use them at Buffer in our customer service tweets, our emails, our Slack channel. We include GIFs in marketing emails and team announcements. Anywhere there's a message, there's an opportunity for a GIF! Some social networks have embraced the GIF movement, while others are a little further behind. Sharing GIFs to your social accounts through Buffer Publish, will vary depending on the social network, as outlined below.

Twitter
Facebook ✅  HTML5 links only
LinkedIn

Instagram

Twitter

To share a GIF to Twitter, upload it within the composer and then create your post as usual. Please note, you're only able to upload GIFs up to 3MB in size.

Once published, the GIF will be displayed and will play automatically.

Facebook

GIFs can be shared to Facebook through Buffer Publish, only if the HTML5 video link is shared. This is a video that loads a smaller and faster version of the GIF. If you're grabbing GIFs from  https://giphy.com/ for example, you'll need to copy the HTML5 video link.

You can then paste that link into the composer.

Once published, the GIF will be displayed and will play automatically.

Sadly it's not possible to share GIFs to Facebook through Buffer Publish by uploading them within the composer. If you do upload a GIF and share the post to Facebook, it will be displayed as a static image. We're hoping to allow uploading GIFs for Facebook soon.

LinkedIn

Sadly GIFs are not yet supported on LinkedIn.

Google+
